“It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine.”

This lockdown is tougher for most of us, but in so many different ways. For single people, it's blurred days and nights of loneliness and isolation, and for families it's never ending work, parenting and remote learning in a precarious and tense balance. We need a circuit breaker. We need something to focus on that gives us hope. We need a way to connect, to show each other that we are in this together, that we care for each other and our children, that we know we will get through this and come out the other side resilient and strong.
So how do we stay strong in this time? How can we communicate that we care when we are stuck in our homes, unable to even smile at a neighbour with our mask-covered faces?
Well, how about with Sunflowers! Sunflowers are an enduring symbol of hope and happiness. They grow a single flower in isolation that shifts to focus on the light. In these times we all need to focus on the light, to keep positive, like a field of sunflowers in the sun.
Playground Ideas has supported communities for over a decade to create beautiful stimulating play spaces for over 2.5 million children in 143 countries, and now is the time to extend that play space to all. We ALL need a beautiful place to play, to walk, to breathe, and we want to join with Australians to fill our front yards, nature strips and empty lots with sunflowers this Spring.
Playground Ideas is asking all Australians to support Playground Ideas, and each other, by planting Sunflowers where they can be viewed and enjoyed by others. We do this as an act of hope and solidarity with our neighbours. We will get through this together.

Sunflowers are super easy to plant and grow!
Here’s how to plant them and take care of them so they grow tall and bright!

Tips and tricks:
If it’s too cold to plant the seeds (if there is still frost on the ground), you can start growing the sunflower seeds indoors and then move them outdoors when it warms up.

- You can plant sunflowers in a pot or in the ground
- Sunflowers grow in most types of soil
- Make sure the spot you plant them has about 6-8 hours of sunlight every day
- Spring and early summer are the best times to plant sunflowers
- They take about 10-12 weeks to bloom fully
- Make sure they are sheltered from strong winds
- You don’t need to use fertiliser, as it can actually harm the plants
- Sunflowers love water! Water them until the water pools at the base of the flower
- The best time to water sunflowers is in the morning before the sun is properly on them
- It is best to use netting to protect your seeds from birds and other animals - available from Bunnings or similar stores
If it’s too cold to plant the seeds (if there is still frost on the ground), you can start growing the sunflower seeds indoors and then move them outdoors when it warms up.
Steps to planting indoors:
- Fill a large pot with potting mix or soil
- Dig a 3 centimetre deep hole in the soil
- Place one seed in the hole and cover it over with soil
- Water every day until they sprout (which will take 1-2 weeks), making sure the soil is damp but not flooded
- Continue watering them every day until they grow to about 60 centimetres- then you can start to water them less- only every few days, and then when they are fully grown, you can water them once a week.
Steps to planting outdoors:
- Dig holes about 3 centimetres deep and make sure there is at least 60 centimetres between each hole.
- Place the one seed in each hole and cover them over with soil
- If possible, cover the seeds with netting
- Water them every day until they sprout (which will take 1-2 weeks), making sure the soil is damp but not flooded
- Continue watering them every day until they grow to about 60 centimetres- then you can start to water them less- only every few days, and then when they are fully grown, you can water them once a week.
How to make your own small paper plant pots for seedlings
Rolling Method: https://www.abc.net.au/gardening/factsheets/newspaper-pots/10460320
Materials needed:
- A long, tall cup or glass, shaped with a bit of a taper if possible
- Newspaper
- Potting mix
- Seed – fast growing species such as zucchini or peas work well.
Method:
- Take 2-3 sheets of newspaper, lay it out flat on a table, then fold up the bottom third lengthways, and fold it up again, so you now have triple thickness.
- Lay the cup over the folded newspaper, so the open end of the cup sits about two thirds of the way up the paper. The overhanging third of the paper will fold inside the cup, so position the cup so the neat, single fold will wrap around the cup and the loose ends will be tucked inside.
- Roll the paper around the cup – no too tightly or it will be hard to remove the cup
- Try to keep the top of the cup rolling in a straight line
- Push the loose folded third into the cup and then carefully pull out the cup
- Use the base of the cup to flatten out the folded-in paper, which will form the base of the pot. There will be a slight hole left but that’s ok – this will allow for drainage.
- Secure the loose edge of the paper with a paperclip or a staple.
- Fill your pot with potting mix and plant your seed into the pot.’
